The Picatrix, known in Arabic as the Ghayat al-Hikam or the Path of the Wise, was the most popular text of astrological magic in the European Middle Ages and Renaissance. Despite the fact that the mere possession of what was reputed to be a work of the most malefic magic could cause one to be prosecuted for witchcraft and sorcery, it circulated in widely in manuscript form going unpublished until modern times. Its reputation in Europe echoed that of the Islamic World where it was seen as the most complete treatment of astrological magic and similarly condemned as a text of black magic.
