So many are the books and articles which have already been written about the symbolism of the fish in early Christianity, and about the cult of this sacred animal in the other pre-Christian religions, that it might seem impossible to find out anything new about this subject. I hope to have opened an entirely new aspect of the question by discussing, as far as I know, for the first time, not the cult of the sacred fish itself, but the worship of a divine fisher, the rites and the beliefs which the different nations of the ancient world connected with this peculiar mythic figure, and finally the Christian symbolism of the Messianic "fisher of men," which is indeed entirely different from and quite independent of the much discussed Christian  allegory of which I have proposed a new very simple explanation.
